Walnut Tree
In the centre of the burh is a walnut tree. About the height of a man, this small tree is a witness to all the comings and goings of the burh.
Real Life
The original range of the common walnut (Juglans regis) was from Southeast Europe to China. It was introduced into Britain, in early times, probably by the Romans, so was well-established 1000 years ago. It grows into a large tree with a height of 80-115 feet, with a trunk of up to or 20 feet girth. Our walnut had some way to go!
